HTC HD games
Posted on 21. Mar, 2009 by Jane.
The new version of SPB Mobile Shell is now available, read our impressions here, or get a free trial here.
Notice: 6th October 2009: New HTC HD2 announced – read more here.
Whenever I get a new Windows Mobile phone, I always head to sites such as Handango or Handster to see what I have been missing since my last visit. And the truth is, I am not missing much… When you see the games coming out for the iPhone, it is easy to be a bit disappointed at the lack of innovation and quality in Windows Mobile games.
So I have had a really good look through, and have picked out seven games (not all of them new) which are compatible with the HTC Touch HD, ideally make good use of the 800×480 (WVGA) screen resolution, are useable without needing hardware keys, are innovative, and playable. Some of the games will only work at VGA resolution (eg. 640×480), but will work without problems, or will work if you run a program such as WVGAFIX beforehand. All are available from Handango.
Here’s the list…
htc touch hd compatible games
Atomic Cannon – buy here

Visit the developer’s website to see their other Pocket PC games (will be having a look at Machines of War soon).
Sid Meier’s Civilization IV: War of Two Cities

Meltdown
Platform game, excellent hi resolution graphics, get a trial or buy from here: Meltdown (PocketPC) (ignore the compatibility warning, it does work…)

Nine Hole Golf
Will run in WVGA, but looks better if you run WVGAFIX first to prevent graphics being stretched. Buy or try here: OmniGSoft – 3D Nine Hole Golf

Obulis
Innovative puzzle game
Runs fine in WVGA but with white bar at the bottom of the screen.
Buy or trial at Handango.

Resco Bubbles
g-sensor (accelerometer) controlled.
Buy or trial here: Resco Bubbles

Essential free utilities compatible with the HTC Touch HD
Posted on 01. Jan, 2009 by admin.
Some essential free utilities compatible with the HTC Touch HD. All are .CAB files, just download the file to your computer, copy across to device (using Activesync, or if connected as a ‘hard drive’ then direct drag and drop). Locate the .CAB file on your device using the mobile File Explorer, and double-click to install. The programs can be un-installed from the “Start > Settings > System > Remove Programs” option on your device. All programs have been used by ourselves without issues, but are installed at users own risk!
Touch Response (FREE)
SnailSlug TouchResponse
The stock HTC Touch HD only gives an optional vibrate response for the main TouchFlo 3D tabs but nowhere else.
Install TouchResponse to Vibrate on touch for all buttons, even using the virtual keypad. The length of the vibrate can be adjusted in the TouchResponse settings menu.

SD card tuneup (FREE)
tnyynt SD TuneUP
Much perceived slowness on a Touch HD is actually the fault for the SD card, it can take time to transfer large files from the Micro SD card to memory. This can be improved in two ways, 1) swap the standard 8GB MicroSD card with a CLASS 6 8GB MicroSD card bought separately, 2) install the SD card tuneup utility. It is a good idea to install and run a benchmarking application before and after this type of upgrade so that you can accurately measurements any improvements!

Improved battery icon (FREE)
netsn00p’s Battery Icon
The problem with the standard HTC Touch HD battery indicator in the Task bar is that it only shows four levels of charge remaining (excluding the empty icon). This can make it a little difficult to pace your phone useage over a day. There are numerous solutions available, my favourite is a simple update which keeps the same battery icon, but has a continuous white bar rather than the standard four segments. As the bar shrinks it finally turns yellow, orange and then red as the battery reaches zero.

General settings tuneup (FREE)
Montecristoff HD Tweak
Not all of the settings on the Touch HD can be changed directly through the Windows Mobile operating system settings, or from any of the HTC options tabs. Some settings (such as changing the left and right softkeys on the home screen) require you to search through the Windows Registry, or you can use a utility like Montecristoff HD Tweak which does all the techy stuff for you. Just install HD Tweak, and you see a list of options which can easily be changed using dropdown lists. The program also give ‘advised’ options where these differ from the defaults.
Download HD Tweak here:

HTC Touch HD review
Posted on 18. Nov, 2008 by Paul.
Short review of the HTC Touch HD which I received 10 days ago.
Battery life: Quite impressed, will last over a day with light use, maybe even two days. Today it lasted all day with 2 hours of sat nav work, a couple of calls, a bit of internet, and email checking every 15 minutes.
Screen: Without doubt the 3.8″ screen is the star of the show, and with 800×480px resolution you get great detail. And doesn’t need full backlight brightness to be visible.
TouchFlo 3D: HTC’s own interface masks Windows Mobile nicely, looks good and is pretty responsive. You will need to move out of TouchFlo to view the Inbox etc but I think it works well as a first line of operation. The standard Windows dialogs are sufficiently big in most cases to avoid stylus usage, but the stylus is there if you need it (I have hardly used stylus in 10 days of use).
Internet: The 800×480 resolution gives a lot of space for Opera 9.5 to display sites. A slight niggle is that you cannot select a link without zooming in a bit (solved: go into opera:config, adaptive zoom, change min zoom from 60 to 65), but overall it is very usable and I haven’t found a site yet which didn’t display the same as on a desktop. Full access to secure SSL sites as well, so you can login to your banking, control panels etc. (more…)

HTC Touch HD in UK?
Posted on 03. Nov, 2008 by Paul.
HTC Touch HD is nearly here in the UK, and amongst all of the ‘reviews’ based on pre-release specs, there are a few of the genuine article in there somewhere.
Try Pocket Lint’s review, or there are a number of first impressions articles such as at Slash Gear. Youtube have some good Touch HD hands on videos.
If you have a Touch HD on order, then the user manual is available on the net. wmpoweruser.com have the links you need.
