Touch HD with keyboard!

HTC has announced what is effectively a Touch HD with a keyboard, but is in fact the follow-up to the Touch Pro – the new Touch Pro 2.

With a 3.6 inch WVGA (800×480) display (slightly smaller than the Touch HD), and a full QWERTY keyboard this looks like being a great addition to the HTC range. It also features a ‘zoom strip’ for zooming into web pages and documents. More details to follow, or view the HTC website. The phone will be available Summer 2009.

iPhone vs Touch HD vs Blackberry Storm vs Xperia X1

The latest issue of PDA Essentials (issue 84) has an interesting match up between the iPhone, HTC Touch HD, Blackberry Storm and Sony-Eriksson Xperia X1. Other magazines seem to have only taken notice of the Blackberry so it is good to see some coverage for some of the other touch screen contenders.

The latest issue of Stuff magazine (issue 121 April 2009) also reviews the Touch HD against it’s rivals where it gets a Stuff Hot Buy rating, and is crowned Supertest winner. The other phones in the Supertest are the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, the Samsung M8800 Pixon, the T-mobile G1, and the LG KF900 Prada.

Much as I love my HTC Touch HD, the specs for the recently announced Toshiba TG01 look fantastic…

  • 4.1 inch WVGA touchscreen (even larger than the 3.8 inch screen of the Touch HD!)
  • 1GHz T- Snapdragon QSD8250 Qualcomm chip set (Touch HD is 528MHz).
  • Just 9.9mm thick
  • G-sensor and a ’shake” function
  • Windows Mobile 6.1

Definitely one to watch…

HTC Touch HD specific version of Copilot 7 now available

HTC Touch HD specific version of Copilot 7 now available

ALK Copilot 7 sat nav with HTC Touch HD.

ALK Copilot 7 Sat nav for Touch HDAs promised in the  ALK blog, a version of Copilot 7 specifically for the Touch HD is now available. Existing owners of the standard Windows Mobile version can get the new version by contacting ALK support. The new version is supposed to be available for new customers from Handango UK, but I have not managed to find it on there myself…  If you are in a hurry, then you should be able to buy the standard Windows Mobile edition, and then contact Support for the upgraded version. Might be best to get advice from ALK first though.  The new version is essentially the same as the existing VGA compatible version (see screenshot to the left for standard version on Touch HD), but uses the full 800×480 resolution to display the map rather than just stretching the VGA map to fill that resolution (screenshot to follow soon). The icons in particular now look sharper, and the mapping does look better if you concentrate!

Some people have complained about GPS lag on the Touch HD but have to say that it was not something that was immediately apparent to me. Careful monitoring did show that the recorded position was up to 20 metres behind my actual position at 70mph but I have not found this to be a problem in practice.

HTC Touch HD review

Short review of the HTC Touch HD which I received 10 days ago.

Battery life: Quite impressed, will last over a day with light use, maybe even two days. Today it lasted all day with 2 hours of sat nav work, a couple of calls, a bit of internet, and email checking every 15 minutes.

Screen: Without doubt the 3.8″ screen is the star of the show, and with 800×480px resolution you get great detail. And doesn’t need full backlight brightness to be visible.

TouchFlo 3D: HTC’s own interface masks Windows Mobile nicely, looks good and is pretty responsive. You will need to move out of TouchFlo to view the Inbox etc but I think it works well as a first line of operation. The standard Windows dialogs are sufficiently big in most cases to avoid stylus usage, but the stylus is there if you need it (I have hardly used stylus in 10 days of use).

Internet: The 800×480 resolution gives a lot of space for Opera 9.5 to display sites. A slight niggle is that you cannot select a link without zooming in a bit (solved: go into opera:config, adaptive zoom, change min zoom from 60 to 65), but overall it is very usable and I haven’t found a site yet which didn’t display the same as on a desktop. Full access to secure SSL sites as well, so you can login to your banking, control panels etc. (more…)

HTC Touch HD in UK?

HTC Touch HD is nearly here in the UK, and amongst all of the ‘reviews’ based on pre-release specs, there are a few of the genuine article in there somewhere.

Try Pocket Lint’s review, or there are a number of first impressions articles such as at Slash Gear. Youtube have some good Touch HD hands on videos.

If you have a Touch HD on order, then the user manual is available on the net. wmpoweruser.com have the links you need.
