Notice: 6th October 2009: New HTC HD2 announced – read more here.

Whenever I get a new Windows Mobile phone, I always head to sites such as Handango or Handster to see what I have been missing since my last visit. And the truth is, I am not missing much… When you see the games coming out for the iPhone, it is easy to be a bit disappointed at the lack of innovation and quality in Windows Mobile games.

So I have had a really good look through, and have picked out seven games (not all of them new) which are compatible with the HTC Touch HD, ideally make good use of the 800×480 (WVGA) screen resolution, are useable without needing hardware keys, are innovative, and playable. Some of the games will only work at VGA resolution (eg. 640×480), but will work without problems, or will work if you run a program such as WVGAFIX beforehand. All are available from Handango.

Here’s the list…

htc touch hd compatible games

Meltdown

Platform game, excellent hi resolution graphics, get a trial or buy from here: Meltdown (PocketPC) (ignore the compatibility warning, it does work…)

Nine Hole Golf

Will run in WVGA, but looks better if you run WVGAFIX first to prevent graphics being stretched. Buy or try here: OmniGSoft – 3D Nine Hole Golf

January 2009 Windows Mobile Game of the Month – Towers Trap

EC30’s Windows Mobile Pocket PC game of the month for January 2009 is Towers Trap written by Game Zone Project.

Build a barricade using 7 types of defensive towers each with their own strengths against waves of ‘aliens’ (8 types of alien). Certain towers are only effective against some aliens, and one type of tower has no offensive properties but instead provides radar coverage for attacks by otherwise invisible aliens.

After buying this game for my HTC Touch HD, I played it non-stop when I didn’t have more important things to do. It really is very addictive, easy to learn, but difficult to master the required strategies. High scores can be published to the web.

The game itself works well on the WVGA screen of an HTC HD, and doesn’t require any hardware buttons, although one problem is that the phone/battery notification bar does flicker intermitently, perhaps something the developers can look at. Also on the Touch HD, the keyboard obscures the screen when entering your name/group for high score publish to the web. A workaround I found was to press the Touch HD Home button, then go to Running Programs and reselect Towers Trap. The keyboard is then no longer activated and you can press the Publish to Web button.

Overall, an excellent, simple yet addictive action strategy game.
